What is a professional organizer?
The National Association of Professional Organizers defines Professional Organizers as people who use tested principles and expertise to enhance the lives of clients. They design custom organizing systems and teach organizing skills, they help individuals and businesses take control of their surroundings, their time, their paper piles, their lives!
What Makes You Qualified to be a Professional Organizer?
Throughout my 21-year career in higher education, I received training on project management, coaching, goal setting and more. I spearheaded complex international projects and strategic planning that required long-range planning and organizing. I also simultaneously managed multiple teams with differing goals while being in charge of a busy student-service center. Prior to my career in higher education, I worked in the social services sector where I learned how our communities are connected and noticed that there was a lack of services for seniors.
In addition to my career, I am a self-taught home organizer with a passion for simplicity and creating sustainable systems. After close to twenty years of living in a century home with little storage space I have learned some things!
Since becoming a professional organizer, I completed the Professional Practices course by NAPO and 6 CEU hours on Hoarding Disorder. I continue to maintain my knowledge through training, active research and reading.
How does it work? How do you help me organize?
First, I will assess the situation. I will listen to you to determine what your goals are and help you develop a plan. Then we get to work executing that plan. Typically, we will start by sorting through your items and progressing to developing a system for organization. I will work with you to teach you how to maintain your system and check in with you periodically to see how you are doing.
Can you make my space Instagram-worthy?
Can you maintain an all-white space with all your pantry items organized by color? Do you normally shop for food by color? After spending your precious weekend time shopping do you see yourself getting excited to decant all your items into clear containers? If you answer yes to these questions and you have a Container Store budget, then let’s get started.
However, I find most people have busy lives and don’t enjoy household chores. We strive to help people discover ways to organize and simplify their lives that are sustainable—and that rarely rises to the level of perfection portrayed on Instagram.
What is your policy for Document Handling, Shredding, and/or Disposal of Household Items?
We may assist with the coordination of trash removal, document shredding, and donations but we do not directly perform these services. The Client is responsible for disposing of their property properly.
Suggestions regarding procurement and/or retention of legal, financial, and accounting documents may be made by the organizer to expedite the organizing process. However, all final decisions regarding these documents should be made by the Client’s personal CPA, Attorney or Financial Advisor.
I live far away from my loved one, how can you help? What services do you provide for seniors?
We provide specialized services for seniors who don’t have children or don’t have children nearby. We can step in to provide light tech help and household tasks that don’t rise to the level of needing a professional handy person. For example, we help seniors set up the health and safety features on their smartphones and watches and learn how to text and video conference so they can stay connected to family and friends. Do they need a picture hung or something assembled? We can help. Additionally, we find that when someone loses a spouse, the surviving spouse is often adrift and doesn’t know how to do many of the things the deceased spouse took care of for so many years. We can create calendars and schedules for tasks such as household bills and home maintenance and provide training if needed.
What is your cancellation policy and refund policy?
All appointments will be scheduled in advance and reminders may not be sent by Organized by Polly, LLC. Clients may cancel appointments at no charge up to 48 hours in advance. Organized by Polly, LLC will charge 50% of the scheduled session fee for cancellations of less than 48 hours’ notice. No future sessions will be performed or scheduled until the cancellation fee is paid in full.
All services are non-refundable. We strive to provide a high-quality service for our clients and your satisfaction is important to us. Please notify us immediately if you are unhappy with any of our services and we will strive to make it right.
How long are the sessions? How many sessions does it take?
All our sessions are booked in 3-hour increments. For a simple, small project, one session may be enough. However, most people have more complex projects that may require multiple sessions.
Will you make me throw away all my stuff?
No, I do not throw away people’s things. We will work together every step of the way. We will set goals and develop a plan together. What you keep and what you throw away will always be your choice.
Can I hire you to throw out all my loved one’s things while they are away on vacation?
No, people’s things are personal and while something might seem like garbage to you, it could be a treasure for that person. Throwing away a person’s things without their permission is cruel and would violate NAPO’s Code of Ethics.
If I purchase a 10-hour gift pack of sessions for my loved one, will you make sure they clean out their space and report back to me?
Our 10-hour gift pack is our most popular purchase and is often purchased by the children of seniors looking to downsize or who need light tech and household assistance. Just like any gift, once it is bestowed upon the recipient it is theirs to do as they please. We will work with your loved one as we do with all our clients by setting goals and developing a project plan. As noted above, we do not make anyone throw out their possessions. We will work with them to create a safe and maintainable space and can report back to you with permission from your loved one. If we encounter any situation regarding the health and safety of your loved one, we will contact you immediately.
I think my loved one has hoarding disorder, can you help?
Hoarding disorder is a mental illness. People who have hoarding disorder should be treated with dignity, sensitivity, and respect. People who have hoarding tendencies or a documented diagnosis of Hoarding Disorder should be encouraged to seek help that will provide them with a multi-faceted approach to healing. Please note that forcing someone to throw away their possessions or doing it without their knowledge and consent can be a traumatic experience for the individual and can result in increased hoarding behaviors. The Organized by Polly team is not qualified, nor has the resources to assist with these cases. We recommend starting with the excellent resources provided by the Institute for Chronic Disorganization.
What payments do you accept?
All payments are expected at the end of each organizing session. We use Square to provide invoices and easy payment options for our clients. We accept cash, check, debit card, credit card, Apple Pay, and CashApp.
